We have scheduled a bunch of online training programs over the coming months. All are delivered via Zoom. Some of the programs are half-day workshops and the others are full-day sessions Times are set to New York. Each link will take you to a fuller description with dates, times, price, and registration. Hope to see you there!
1️⃣ JOLTS: WAKE UP AND ENGAGE YOUR PARTICIPANTS (NOVEMBER 5: 09:00 AM- 05:00 PM EDT)
A jolt is a brief experiential activity that delivers a wake-up call to the participants. The impact of a jolt forces the participants to re-examine their assumptions and change their behaviors. This live online workshop will demonstrate our collection of powerful jolts, each lasting for a few minutes but providing insights for lengthy debriefing and lifelong application. Through a hands-on approach, you will also learn how to select, conduct, and debrief this innovative training tool. Heck… we will even share with you the secret for creating your own jolts!
GOALS
Improve the instructional and motivational effectiveness of your training through short experiential activities followed by reflection and discussion.
Demonstrate a positive attitude toward the appropriate use of jolts as a flexible training tool.
2️⃣ LOLA: LIVE ONLINE LEARNING ACTIVITIES (November 24-25: 08:00 AM- 05:30 PM EDT) Conducted in French.
3️⃣ THE BUSINESS AND POLITICS OF TRAINING & CONSULTING (December 3: 09:00 AM- 05:00 PM EDT)
We spend a lot of time talking about the perfect way to approach instructional design. We post tons of information about how we should ideally provide our services to our clients. But, as with most things, reality often pokes its ugly head up disrupting our best intentions. This workshop is all about the politics and business aspects of what we do in the learning industry. This is about the pragmatic over the ideal. The realistic over the aspirational. It is also about the ethical versus the expedient.
In this one-day, live online workshop, we will explore all the sundry aspects of how we get our deals, foster them, keep them, and adhere to what is hopefully a strict and ethical standard. You will work through several case methodologies, role play difficult client conversations, and develop strategies you can immediate employ with your own client relationships. We will delve into:
Negotiation strategies
Types of client conversations and how to have them
Scoping
Influencing
Difficult/ Boundary
Advocation and referral
Pricing and contracting strategies
Overance and scope creep
Politics (internal within your organization, and internal to the client organization)
Managing logistics and other constraints to your perfect solutions
How to convey your value without seeming like a snake-oil salesperson (Tooting your own horn sensibly and effectively)
Client, and specifically, account management
And anything else you want to discuss
4️⃣ EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT LEARNING SCIENCE BUT WERE TOO AFRAID TO BE ASKED (December 9: 10:00 AM- 01:00 PM EDT)
Should you adhere to the principles of Dale’s Cone? Are learning styles something we should adapt our learning designs to when creating training? What does the research say about gamification? Is eLearning effective? Heck… what do we mean by eLearning? MBTI, DiSC, Multiple Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence… any intelligence… are they worth using when delivering learning interventions? Or, are there better approaches. Approaches that are supported, or at least aligned, to current science?
This short, highly interactive session explores many of the current and recent myths, misconceptions, and superstitions (to borrow from our friend, Clark Quinn) in the learning industry. We use a quiz game format to test many presumptions we have about these pervasive models and processes and tools. And then, we share with you the actual research. Don’t worry. You don’t have to be a scientist, a statistician, or a mathematician. In fact, we will give you a set of very simple questions you can use to to evaluate whether you should use a particular model or tool.
Delivered via Zoom, and in partnership with Truth In Learning co-host an
5️⃣ HOW TO SPECIFY AND ACHIEVE AFFECTIVE OBJECTIVES IN TRAINING (December 10: 09:00 AM- 05:00 PM EDT)
Trainers and managers have a slightly negative attitude toward changing the attitudes of learners and team members. Their hesitation is due to the feeling that specifying and achieving affective objectives requires complex competencies far beyond what are used in typical training and coaching techniques. However, as this workshop will demonstrate, the basic principles of persuasion and motivation can be easily acquired and applied through a series of hands-on training activities.
HOW WILL YOU BENEFIT FROM THIS WORKSHOP?
After completing this workshop and the follow-up activities, you will plan and implement effective strategies for specifying and achieving affective objectives related to training topics and workplace results.
6️⃣ TECHNICAL TIPS, TRICKS, AND TECHNIQUES FOR PRODUCING AND FACILITATING LIVE ONLINE TRAINING (December 17: 09:00 AM- 12:00 PM EDT)
So many folks are using Zoom, Bluejeans, Adobe Connect, WebEx, GoTo Training, Teams, and more to facilitate Live Online Training (LOT) Workshops (Some use the acronym, VILT- Virtual Instructor-Led-Training). That’s great. We would argue that Live Online Training (LOT) is as good— and even in some cases— better than traditional in-person training. Why? Because the technology has caught up and our instructional designs can now be executed using the available tech. Specifically, we can deliver activities-based training for a myriad of topics. In fact, at The Thiagi Group, we have converted most of our games and simulations to the LOT setting. These are not direct translations. No. Rather, we have redesigned the activities so we best leverage the platform to reach the objective(s) of the designs. This three-hour program walks the talk. We will deliver it all on Zoom (although you can apply everything you learn to other platforms, as well). You will learn several activities you can steal and modify to your own trainings as we demonstrate the functionality of the LOT platforms. Throughout, we will provide you with tips, tricks, and shortcuts to make your LOT facilitation more effective, and more efficient. Your participants will thank you!
By the end of the session, you will:
Use LOT platform features to increase interactivity (breakout rooms, CHAT, annotate, drawing, file sharing, polling, screen sharing, videos, and more).
Explore the roles and responsibilities of LOTs.
Leverage at least six activities to customize your own LOTs.
Explore a list of at least 55 tips and techniques for managing the Tech.
Use Zoom to manage your audience needs.
Leverage a producers’ checklist for managing behind the scenes.
