To celebrate the publication of our latest book, INTERACTIVE TECHNIQUES FOR LEARNING, we (Thiagi and Matt) are going on tour… well… going on tour to one city, in the US for just two days. (Of course, we will be in France later in the year, as well).

This two-day workshop will follow the outline of the first two sections of the book and will use, model, and teach the interactive techniques in the third part of the book to explore the content in the first two.

For example, when we share how we do instructional design, we will use Textra Activities, Role Play, and Interactive Storytelling. We will use the activities we wrote in the book to teach the content. We will also step out of the teaching context, go meta, and debrief how we used the activities, and how you can modify them for your own situations.

Here's another example. We will open the program with an exploration of what is learning in the first place. We have been devising and providing activities for learning for decades and thought it about time we share a bit on how humans actually do learn. To provide you with the content for this module, we will use interactive lectures, jolts, and assessment-based learning activities. After we complete the module, we will again go meta, and debrief how we used the activities and ensure you can later use them yourself.

You will get a deep dive into how we think about learning, activities-bases learning, learning motivation, how to choose an activity, how to evaluate activities and your program, and so much more.

And you will experience, debrief, and learn how to take the activities we used to make them your own!

THE PROGRAM

DAY ONE:

MODULE 1: Introduction

Content:

We will welcome you, introduce the program, explain the unique approach we will take throughout the two days, and share mutual expectations. We will also introduce what we mean by facilitative training.

MODULE 2: What is Learning

Content:

We will explore the science of learning. We will share the cognitive architecture for how learning happens and what is required to support it instructionally. We will also introduce several strategies that enhance learning, as well as detractors—such as myths and misconceptions about learning.

MODULE 3: What we mean by “activity”

Content:

We will share the Thiagi concept of a Framegame and how it fits on a continuum. We will share the seven different types of activities, and the four we use when instructing.

MODULE 4: Learning Motivation

Content:

In this module we will introduce how motivation supports the process of learning and how you can create a more intrinsically motivating learning environment.

MODULE 5: Our Principles and Procedures

Content:

We are guided by a distinct set of principles that inform all our decisions when designing and delivering training. We also follow a specific process when designing training (our instructional design method). We share both.

MODULE 6: Evaluation and Assessment

Content:

All seem to agree that it is essential to evaluate learning effectiveness. How do we approach it? Why do we approach it this way? We will share!

MODULE 7: Close Day 1

Content:

We will wrap up the day using a bunch of debriefing and closing activities.

DAY TWO:

MODULE 1: Welcome Back

Content:

We conduct a review exercise about Day One and preview what’s coming for Day Two.

MODULE 2: How we Conduct Debriefing

Content:

Thiagi has a long-used and trustrd set of debrief question categories. We will model how we use them, give them to you, and ask you to try and practice using them.

MODULE 3: How We Organize Our Activities

Content:

Thiagi has identified 49 interactive strategies. Each strategies contains a set of activities that support meeting the objective of those strategies. Our book introduces and shares activities from 11 of them. We share the taxonomy we use.

MODULE 4: How We Choose Which Activity to Use

Content:

There are many ways one might choose an activity, but doing so must meet certain standards of good instruction. We provide those principles and share a process for deciding which activity to pick and when. We then urge you to adjust that process accordingly.

MODULE 5: Conducting, Modifying, and Evaluating Activities

Content:

We have written three checklists—one for conducting an activity, one for modifying an activity, and one for evaluating an activity. To share the checklist items, we will use several card games to teach this content.

MODULE 6: Managing the Classroom

Content:

How do you manage the difficult participant (or challenging)? How do you consider other logistical factors when delivering interactive learning?

FACILITATORS

DR. SIVASAILAM “THIAGI” THIAGARAJAN is the founder and Resident Mad Scientist at The Thiagi Group, an organization with the mission of helping people improve their performance effectively and enjoyably.

Thiagi served as the editor of ISPI's Performance & Instruction for more than 10 years. He has written a monthly GameLetter for 15 years; it currently appears as the GameBlog on this website.

Thiagi has twice been elected the president of the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), 27 years apart (in 1979 and 2006). He has also been the five-time president of the North American Simulation and Gaming Association (NASAGA).

As a global nomad, Thiagi has lived in three different countries and has conducted training workshops in 21 others. Earlier in his life, he has been a high-school science teacher, street corner magician, researcher, editor of a professional journal, keynote speaker, college professor, USAID project director, and writer.

MATT RICHTER is the President of The Thiagi Group. He is a facilitator, game designer, instructional designer, and management consultant. Matt has consulted and delivered training with many organizations including Grant Thornton, Twilio, VMWare, SanDisk, Redwood Trust, CenturyLink, Imerys, EA, Microsoft, Carolina Power and Light, IGT, Cadence Design Systems, and Sony. He is an expert in the areas of management, leadership, motivation, and performance technology. Matt mixes corporate, not-for-profit, academic, and independent experience, enabling him to adapt and best serve his clients. His book, The Leadership Story: A New Model for Leadership was published in 2016. In 2020, he co-authored, LOLA: Live Online Learning Activities with his partner, Sivasailam Thiagarajan (Thiagi). And in 2024, the two published Interactive Techniques for Learning with LDA Press.

Matt is co-organizer of LDA (The Learning Development Accelerator), a professional membership group for people in the learning and development field, where we encourage the use of research-inspired and evidence-informed practices.

Matt teaches at EMLyon, in France, as a part of their executive MBA program.
